Each course builds an important part of your safety, equipment, fall-protection, rigging, and mass timber installation knowledge. Completing the entire pathway expands your qualifications and increases the value you bring to contractors, project teams, and the future of mass timber construction.
Once all seven required courses have been successfully completed and verified, Nor Cal Carpenters Training will issue you a Qualified Mass Timber Installer (QMTI) Certificate.

Course 1 of 7 OSHA 30 Hr Construction Safety Supervisor Training 30 Hours
Course Description
Build Your Safety Leadership Foundation
This OSHA class is often a requirement for foremen, superintendents, and other jobsite supervisors. The class consists of a more extensive, 30-hour in-depth study of OSHA regulations and topics.
Course 2 of 7 Construction Fall Protection 8 Hours
Course Description
Protect Yourself and Your Crew at Height
Falls are one of the major causes of death in the construction industry. More than 100,000 fall-related injuries occur each year. Many of the injuries result in disabilities, and approximately 200 result in death. To protect UBC members and other workers on the job, Nor Cal Carpenters Training offers in-depth training in fall protection. The course covers regulatory requirements, available fall-protection devices and equipment, how to select and use the proper equipment, tie-off points, and hands-on practice.

Building codes are increasingly requiring the use of fire-stop materials. This class explains and demonstrates the correct techniques for installing fire-stop materials.
Course 4 of 7 Fork Lift Safety / Rough Terrain 8 Hours
Course Description
Operate Rough-Terrain Equipment with Confidence
Each year, approximately 100 workers are killed and almost 95,000 are injured in industrial-truck accidents. OSHA requires construction-site forklift operators to complete powered industrial truck safety training before operating this type of equipment. This UBC course satisfies OSHA training requirements and includes safe maneuvering, lifting and transporting materials, equipment operation, general safety considerations, and practical skills demonstration. The course benefits both new and experienced operators.
Course 5 of 7 Mobile Elevating Work Platforms 8 Hours
Course Description
Qualify on Scissor and Boom Lifts
Formerly called Aerial Lift, MEWP is now a three-part course. Members do not meet the qualification to operate the equipment until completing theory and practical training for both scissor and boom lifts. All three parts are included. The course addresses federal requirements for workers using boom-supported platforms and self-propelled platform lifts. It includes classroom instruction, federal regulations, ANSI standards, manufacturer requirements, pre-operation safety checks, and hands-on training.
Course 6 of 7 Rigger and Signaler Qualification 40 Hours
Course Description
Strengthen Your Rigging and Signaling Skills
This qualification course is designed to increase your knowledge and confidence in applying safe and intelligent principles to rigging operations. Classroom sessions cover cranes, crane safety, wire rope, wire and nylon slings, load calculations, rigging hardware, load-line attachments, fiber and synthetic ropes, knot tying, International Hand Signals, and accident prevention. A full-day practical session includes rigging, picking, and signaling exercises using a crane or boom truck. Enrollment is limited to 12 students for safety and quality of instruction.
Course 7 of 7 CLT – Cross Laminated Timber Construction 32 Hours
Course Description
Bring the Mass Timber Pathway Together
This course covers the basics of Cross Laminated Timber construction, commonly known as CLT. The class introduces the materials, methods, manufacturing, transportation, lifting hardware, connection hardware, installation procedures, rigging awareness, safety, and signaling involved in CLT construction. Panels may reach lengths of 40 feet or more. Completion of this course does not provide a Rigging Qualification; that qualification requires a separate course.
The CITF Rigging Certification is highly recommended, but the Rigger and Signaler Qualification will be accepted as part of the QMTI Certificate pathway.
